Angus e Malcolm foram apresentados ao cenário do
rock and roll por seu irmão mais velho, George.
Ele se tornou um grande astro na Austrália em meados da década de 60 com um grupo chamado Easybeats.
Isto deixou uma impressão nos dois irmãos mais novos e os dois acabaram aprendendo a tocar guitarra,
tomando lições de George quando este não estava em
turnê. Depois eles montaram a sua própria banda.
Malcolm participou de algumas bandas de garagem
que não chegaram a lugar algum. Em 1971 chegou a
participar do Velvet Underground. Angus, por seu
lado, montou uma banda chamada Tantrum. As
únicas apresentações foram em festas escolares.
Isto durou até 1973 quando ambos se juntaram para formar o AC/DC.
A estréia do AC/DC ocorreu na festa de ano novo de 1973 no clube noturno
Sydney´s Chequers. A formação inicial da banda era: Angus na guitarra solo, Malcolm na guitarra base, Colin Burgess na bateria, Van Knedt no baixo e Dave
Evans nos vocais.
A formação sofreu diversas alterações. Primeiro Colin Burgess saiu, sendo substituido por Ron Carpenter. Depois Larry Van Knedt saiu sendo
substituido por Rob Bailey. Carpenter não durou muito e foi substituido por Russell
Coleman, logo depois trocado por Peter Clark.
O álbum de estréia do AC/DC, High Voltage foi gravado em apenas 10 dias.
O álbum foi lançado na Austrália em Fevereiro de 1974.
Phill Rudd e Mark Evans foram chamados para assumir a bateria e baixo. Esta formação gravaria os próximos
três álbums, T.N.T. em 1975 e Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap em 1976. As gravações de TNT foram lançadas em alguns países apenas como parte integrante do álbum High Voltage.
